FAQ

What are orthodontic braces?
Orthodontics typically involves the use of braces for aligning teeth. Braces consist of brackets that are bonded to the teeth, and arch wires that are threaded through the brackets. The arch wires bend and return to an ideal form to guide each tooth to its proper position. There are two types of orthodontic braces available to our patients: the more traditional metal braces or ceramic "tooth colored" braces.

What about Invisalign®?
ClearCorrect treatment is offered as an esthetic/no braces alternative for more minor types of orthodontic treatment. During your evaluation treatment Dr. Bentele will answer your questions about this type of treatment and discuss what best suits your orthodontic needs.

What’s the difference between an orthodontic specialist such as Dr. Bentele and a general dentist that does braces?
Dental school requires 4 years of education beyond college to provide the expertise for a general dentist to deliver a wide range of dental care.  Dr. Bentele did an additional four years of education: 1 year in a hospital based General Practice Residency and then an additional 3 years at Ohio State concentrating solely on orthodontic education and orthodontic research to earn a Master of Science degree.  We encourage you to compare practices, as there are many fine orthodontic specialists in this area and hopefully you feel we are your best choice.  If you are not sure about the practitioner’s education ask if they attended a university based residency or whether their orthodontic education consisted of weekend courses. Orthodontics is all we do.

Are braces expensive?
Orthodontic treatment provides many benefits that make treatment an outstanding value. Investing in orthodontics now may eliminate the need for more extensive and costly surgical or dental treatment in the future. We offer a variety of options to make payment comfortable and easy. From a relative standpoint, orthodontics is more affordable now than in the 1960’s. Since then the price of a gallon of milk has increased by 12X from 49 cents to nearly 4 dollars and the price of the average car has increased by over 10X from $2,600 to $28,000.  In contrast, because of technological and methodology advancements, orthodontic treatment cost has increased well below the rate of inflation to a level only 3 times what it cost over 40 years ago. View Financial Arrangements.

How soon can I get an appointment?
An evaluation appointment normally can be scheduled within a week after you contact our office. If treatment is indicated diagnostic records will be scheduled at that visit. Within a week after the records appointment the braces can be placed.

What is “Phase 1” or early treatment?
Early treatment is indicated in a limited number of cases in children between the ages of 7 and 11.  This is usually targeted to a specific problem such as a crossbite that is easier to treat at this age.  Typically this will only address part of the orthodontic problem and comprehensive care will still be required about the time the last baby teeth fall out.  As a parent, Dr. Bentele understands the financial and time challenges we face and will only recommend early treatment if the benefits add to the quality of the treatment outcome.

Do braces hurt and will I have problems eating?
There is some discomfort for a few days after the braces are placed and when adjustments are made. Usually Tylenol will relieve whatever discomfort you experience.  Long term Motrin use may actually slow down tooth movement. Most patients are pleasantly surprised at how little their teeth hurt due to the gentle nature of modern materials.  However, the cheeks and lips will require some adaptation to the braces so expect those areas to be tender until they “toughen up”.

How long will I have to wear braces?
The length of treatment is determined by the severity of your orthodontic problems. Normally, a patient will wear the braces 2 to 2 1/2 years and then retainers.

Will my child have to miss school to go to orthodontic appointments?
We offer late afternoon and Saturday morning appointments for the convenience of school age children and busy parents.  In order to maximize the number of patients that may be accommodated in these desirable periods, we ask that you be seen for the longer appointments such as records, initial appliance placement and appliance removal during the morning or early afternoon.

What about sports?
“Boil and bite” mouthguards work well for most sporting activities.  Orthodontics may reduce the risk of dental trauma when completed but during treatment the lips are susceptible to injury during contact sports.

What about playing wind instruments?
Most patients adapt to playing their instruments with braces but it can be challenging.  Occasionally patients use this as an opportunity to learn to play a different instrument.

Will teeth have to be pulled to straighten crooked teeth?
Our goal is to initiate treatment at the ideal age that lessens the need for extractions of permanent teeth.  However, extractions are the best plan if the crowding is moderate to severe and simply aligning the teeth might cause the gums to recede or the lips to protrude in an unsightly manner. Sometimes we will “slenderize” or remove a little enamel from several teeth to gain sufficient room for the teeth.

When should an orthodontist see a child?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that an orthodontist evaluate a child by the age of seven.

Do teeth shift after wearing braces?
Teeth do have a tendency to shift with time even in patients with perfect teeth who did not require orthodontic treatment.  Normally we place a fixed retainer on the bottom front teeth and a removable one on top.  Retainers are the only insurance that you will keep your beautiful smile the rest of your life.

What our patients say...

We went to an evaluation at an orthodontist before this one and the price seemed kind of high so then I came to an evaluation here & not only was the price lower but immediately we felt very comfortable and loved the atmosphere of the office. The staff is wonderful, always on time & Dr. Bentele is a great Dr. - very knowledgeable, friendly & with excellent communication. I would recommend this practice to everyone!

We highly recommend Dr. Bentele and his practice. He is honest, friendly, skilled & timely - you name it. He and his staff are wonderful! Angela at the front desk is especially kind and helpful. Best of all - Dr. Bentele creates a wonderful outcome of beautiful teeth. I've experienced two other orthodontists with other children and Dr. Bentele definitely outshines all - in every way - even in cost! I can't speak highly enough about Bentele Orthodontics!

This office is extremely thorough in explaining all aspects of orthodontics from finances to procedures. I'm very confident in this office.

Dr. Bentele makes the patient feel comfortable with his skill and calm confidence. He's honest about the treatment needed and tries to keep the patient informed of the treatment.

Dr. Bentele is our orthodontist for our two children. He provided clear treatment plans with a practical approach. Dr. Bentele does all of the banding and bonding himself and the office appointments are appropriately scheduled. Our children get in and out quickly and the office is never overscheduled, resulting in short waits and unhurried treatment. We're very satisfied and would recommend our friends to see Dr. Bentele!

Dr. Bentele and all staff have been very professional and the cost was reasonable. The approach of not having braces on longer than necessary is one area where I have seen other children suffer (children who went to other orthodontists). The way Dr. Bentele explains what he is doing and why has been good for my daughter to learn the importance of her treatment. I appreciate Dr. Bentele's patience with us as we experienced a difficult financial time during the beginning of our process.
